Abstract

Abstract In the previous chapter, we offered some reflections on the process of determining “how good” a model is. We stated that for us a “good” model is synonymous with a “useful” model. That is, useful in addressing the stated objectives of the modeling project. We focused primarily on the processes in the modeling cycle involved in model evaluation. In this chapter, we offer some reflections on the usefulness of the modeling process itself and consider how ecological modeling fits into the broader context of problem solving. More specifically, we (1) compare systems modeling to other problem-solving methods, (2) discuss ecological modeling as a problem-solving process, (3) consider the expectations we, as modelers, should have of ecological models, and (4) reflect on the expectations we, as environmental decision-makers, should have of ecological modeling.
