A PI's questions are short and consequential: has this been done, does this claim hold, is this direction worth a year of someone's time. They arrive between other work and rarely justify an afternoon in a database, which is why they often get answered from memory instead — and memory of a literature is reliably a few years out of date. A sourced answer is checkable in a minute, which is the standard that matters here: not whether the answer sounds right, but whether you can confirm it before putting a student on it.
What makes an answer usable for a funding decision?
That you can verify it quickly. An answer with sources takes a minute to check; one without takes an afternoon or gets trusted.
How current is the literature coverage?
Check the publication dates on the sources returned. Recency is visible in the citations rather than something to take on faith.
Can this replace asking a colleague in the field?
No, and a colleague will often know what is unpublished. It replaces the search you would have done before knowing who to ask.
