Environmental research is interdisciplinary by nature and punished for it at submission. A study combining field measurement, modelling and policy implication has three possible homes, and each set of reviewers will find the parts outside their expertise underdeveloped. The usual outcome is a rejection that criticises the paper for not being a different paper. Choosing the venue by which component carries the novelty — rather than by the topic, which spans all three — is the decision that matters most, and it is easier to make by looking at how comparable papers were framed in journals that accepted them.
Why do interdisciplinary papers get rejected on scope?
